Chapleau
"the friendliest town in the north" also known as "black
bear capital of Ontario" is situated 800 kilometers northwest
of Toronto, between the Great Lakes and the Hudson Bay.
Chapleau with a population of less than 3.000 disposes of an airport,
a railwaystation of the C.P.R., a hospital, a small museum and a public
dock for boats and floatplanes. Near the town are 3 Indianreservations
from the First Nations. |

Here
the huge Chapleau Game Preserve the largest of the world
begins and it has 2850 square miles untouched and protected wilderness.
In that Game Preserve there a living aprox. 2.000 black bears, 2.500
moose and 12 - 14 wolvepacks, according to an estimation of the M.N.R.
This area was for centuries the home of the Cree and Objibwe Indians,
but in 1925 it was established as a Game Preserve. Each year the native
people have their traditional meeting, the Pow-Wow. |

This
year the Pow Wow of the "Brunswick House First Nation" was
the most colorful of the 3 Indianfestivals organized by 3 Indiantribes,
to whom belong also the "Cree" and "Ojibway" First
Nations. Their ceremony place is situated very picturesque above a
lake. |
